1 ALGAE Plantlike Protists

2 ALGAE Plantlike Photosynthetic Some are capable of moving
Unicellular and multicellular phyla

3 Unicellular Algae 4 phyla of unicellular algae: 1)Euglenophyta
2)Chrysophyta 3)Bacillariophyta 4)Pyrrophyta

4 Euglenophytes Phylum Euglenophyta Have 2 flagella No cell wall
Example: Euglena

5 Chrysophytes Phylum Chrysophyta Golden algae
Have golden colored chloroplasts Store food in the form of oil

6 Diatoms Phylum Bacilliariophyta
Thin delicate cell walls rich in Si (silicon) Cell walls are 2 sided like a petri dish Diatomaceous earth: used in toothpaste, reflective, and cleansers All live in salt water

7 Dinoflagellates Belong to phylum Pyrrophyta Use 2 flagella
most are photosynthetic Covered by cellulose plates Many are bioluminescent Cause “red tide”

8 Ecology of Unicellular Algae
Important part of water ecosystems Make up much of the phytoplankton that serve as the basis of food chains in water environments Produce O2 Algal blooms may deplete water of nutrients and oxygen (red tide)
