2 The Gospel Paul Preached
1 Corinthians 15:1-4

3 Definition “…originally denoted a reward for good tidings; later, the idea of reward dropped, and the word stood for “the good news” itself. The Eng. word “gospel,” i.e. “good message,” is the equivalent of euangelion (Eng., “evangel”). (Vine, p. 507) “…a word of Anglo-Saxon origin, and meaning “God’s spell”, i.e., word of God, or rather, according to others, “good spell”, i.e., good news. It is the rendering of the Greek evangelion , i.e., “good message.” (Easton’s Bible Dictionary)

4 Explanation There is one gospel, though there may be perversions (Gal. 1:6-9) It is not: Sensationalism Emotionalism A “Social Gospel” Food, fun, frolic Secular education Social engineering Political activism 4

5 Christ received it from God (Heb. 1:2; 2:3)
It is: “The gospel of the grace of God” (Acts 20:24) “The power of God unto salvation” (Rom. 1:16) “The word of truth, the gospel of your salvation” (Eph. 1:13) “The everlasting gospel” (Rev. 14:6) It is of God (Rom. 1:1) Christ received it from God (Heb. 1:2; 2:3) Apostles preached it (Matt. 28:19-20)

6 What Constitutes The Gospel?
Notice Mark 16:15-16 Preaching the gospel incorporates things to be believed as well as commands to be obeyed Unfortunately, many people act as though the former is all of the gospel Let us look at both aspects 6

7 Acts 2 Facts to be believed Commands to be obeyed
Jesus is Lord and Christ (Acts 2:37) Commands to be obeyed Repent and be baptized (Acts 2:38) 7

8 Acts 8:5 Facts to be believed Commands to be obeyed
Kingdom of God (Acts 8:12) Name of Jesus Christ (Acts 8:12) Commands to be obeyed Baptized (Acts 8:12-13) 8

9 Acts 8:35 Facts to be believed Commands to be obeyed
Jesus is the Son of God (Acts 8:37) Commands to be obeyed Baptized (Acts 8:36, 38) 9

10 What Paul preached Facts to be believed (1 Cor. 15:1-4)
Death, burial and resurrection (vv. 3-4) Commands to be obeyed (practice) Paul baptized at Corinth (1 Cor. 1:14, 16) 10

11 Facts + Commands = Gospel 1+2=3 w/o the “2”, “1” does not equal “3”
To focus only on the facts is to omit the commands that are equally important. It is like a simple math calculation Facts + Commands = Gospel 1+2=3 w/o the “2”, “1” does not equal “3” Facts alone are the gospel according to the New Testament 11
