2 Map: a representation of the features of a physical body such as Earth.
Equator: the imaginary circle halfway between the poles that divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

3 Latitude: the distance north or south from the equator; expressed in degrees.
Longitude: the distance east or west from the prime meridian; expressed in degrees.

4 Prime meridian: the meridian, or line of longitude, that is designated as 0° longitude.
Remote sensing: the process of gathering and analyzing information about an object without physically being in touch with the object.

5 GPS is a system of orbiting satellites used to pinpoint a location on Earth.
GIS is a computerized system that visually presents information about an area in overlapping layers.

6 The legend is the part of the map that shows a list of symbols that need explanations.
A satellite-mounted sensor is used to gather data in a passive remote-sensing system. A radar is used to gather data in an active remote-sensing system.
