4-1 Graphing on the Coordinate Plane
Hubarth Algebra
2
Origin is the center at (0,0)
Y-axis Quadrant II (-,+) Quadrant I (+,+) X-axis origin Quadrant III (-,-) Quadrant IV (+,-) Ordered pairs are the coordinate of the points. Coordinates are the x and y of each point. (-2, 4) x-coordinate is the left or right movement left-negative right-positive y-coordinate is the up or down movement up-positive down-negative x-coordinate or abscissa y-coordinate or ordinate

Ex 1 Identifying Coordinates
Name the coordinates of each point in the graph below. M(1, -4) N(-3, 0)

Ex 2 Graphing Graph the points on the same coordinate plane. a. P(–1, 3 ) b. Q(0, –2) a. Move 1 unit to the left of the origin. Then move 3 units up. b. Since the x-coordinate is 0, point Q is on the y-axis. Move 2 units down from the origin.

Ex 3 Identify Quadrants In which quadrant or on which axis would you find each point? a. (5, 3) b. (0, –7) a. Since the x-coordinate is positive and the y-coordinate is positive the point is in Quadrant I. b. Since the x-coordinate is 0, the point is on the y-axis.

. . . . . Practice Graph the points on the same coordinate plane.
a. A(-3, 1) b. B(2, 0) c. C(6, -3) . A . B . C 2. Write the coordinates of points p and r . p p(3, 6) r(-7, -4) . r 3. In which quadrant or on which axis would you find each point? a. A(-3, 1) b. (2, 0) c. (3, 6) d. (-7, -4) quadrant II x-axis quadrant I quadrant III
