The Dystopian world of “1984”
1/9 -2/2 Success and Empowerment How is the phrase language is power? How is language sometimes used deceptively? What are the qualities of effective communication? Do individuals have the power to change the society in which they live? Political satire / totalitarian/ irony/ tone/ symbolism/ Propaganda/Brotherhood/Inner Party/Outer Party Doublethink/Groupthink/ doublethink, newspeak Individualism/ nihilism/ skepticism/reductionalism/totalitaranism Reader’s Theater Double Entry Journals. Metacognitive Reading Logs Guided Lecture Socratic Seminars Fishbowls Storyboards (using storyboardthat) After selecting a topic, conducting research, and compiling at least 3 sources, students will write and present a 4-6 page research paper that addresses one of the questions below.

Totalitarian governments: what does the political structure look like? How has surveillance technology influenced society? Select 3 “isms” and explain how they are evident in today’s world as well as “1984”
