The Thanksgiving tradition is a marvelous thing
The Thanksgiving tradition is a marvelous thing. It has true spiritual context. Being thankful for food is an important point. But there are always things on the table that we don’t like to eat. Sometimes things we don’t like to eat are good for us. How is the Word of God like a Thanksgiving meal?

John 6:32-56 Jesus’ controversial sermon: “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves” Not talking about communion An ancient concept: Living by the Word of God

John 6:32-56 Deuteronomy 8:3 "He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD” Jesus’ controversial sermon: “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves” Not talking about communion An ancient concept: Living by the Word of God

The Taste of the Word Your words were found and I ate them, and Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; For I have been called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts Jeremiah 15:16 Sherry Farris – notes on the taste of the Word of God

The Taste of the Word The Five Flavors Sweet Sour Salty Bitter Savory
Five flavors – three we crave to our distinct tastes, two we avoid, but all five are necessary
11
The Word is Sweet The Word of God can be sweet: Psalm 119:103 Ezekiel 3:3 Sweet because: It promises good things It gives us hope and peace Ps 119:103 ¶ How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Eze 3:3 He said to me, "Son of man, feed your stomach and fill your body with this scroll which I am giving you." Then I ate it, and it was sweet as honey in my mouth.
12
The Word is Sour The Word of God can be sour: Isaiah 22:4 Matthew 19:21-22 Sour because: It spoils worldly things we held dear Isa 22:4 Therefore I say, "Turn your eyes away from me, Let me weep bitterly, Do not try to comfort me concerning the destruction of the daughter of my people.“ Mt 19:21 Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."22 But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.
13
The Word is Salty The Word of God can be Salty: Job 6:6 Colossians 4:6 Salty because: It brings flavor to flavorless things It keeps things preserved 2Ch 13:5 "Do you not know that the LORD God of Israel gave the rule over Israel forever to David and his sons by a covenant of salt? Job 6:6 "Can something tasteless be eaten without salt, Or is there any taste in the white of an egg? Col 4:6 Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.
14
The Word is Bitter The Word of God can be Bitter: Revelation 10:9-10 Bitter because It can cause division and heartache It can cause us to be persecuted and hurt Re 10:9 So I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little book. And he *said to me, "Take it and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey." 10 I took the little book out of the angel's hand and ate it, and in my mouth it was sweet as honey; and when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter
15
The Word is Savory The Word of God can be Savory Psalm 34:8 1 Peter 2:2 Savory because It is rich in flavor It is sustaining and filling in all ways Savory – rich Ps 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! 1Pe 2:2 like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, 3 if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.

A Word of Warning Hebrews 6:4-6 - For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. Once you have tasted the heavenly gift, there can be no other path.

John 6:35 Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst” Hearing & Believing – Romans 10:17 Confession – Matthew 10:32 Repentance – Acts 2:38 Baptism – Mark 16:16 Remain faithful to Him – Matthew 10:22
