Problem Statement Team Goal Individual Goal
Design & build a test bed to mitigate the impact of an asteroid. Individual Goal Create a process to record the velocities, directions, and forces involved in each simulated impact. Incorporate necessary electronics to record measurements from the established process.
3
General Overview Apophis is a near-earth asteroid that was discovered in June 19, 2004 400 m wide and has a mass of 27,000 metric tons Travels at 12.59km per/second or 28,163 mph
4
General Overview (cont.)
In 2029 Apophis will pass very close to Earth 600 mile diameter “keyhole” 1 in 45,000 chance of keyhole passage Possible impact on April 13, 2036 900 Megaton Impact (130x Tunguska Event)
5
Design Objectives Design and build the operational hardware setup.
Program the embedded microcontroller accordingly in order to record appropriate data. Encapsulate chosen hardware components within the asteroid model. Find the relation between actual acquired data and expected data in a non-gravity environment with a real asteroid such as Apophis.
