OSI Model I draw this on the board as I discuss each layer. There is a definition chart for each layer. There is also a handout in the extra resources page of the web site that has an excellent diagram that can be used for this and to discuss encapsulation later in the presentation.

Encapsulation Draw this on the board. Show sender & Receiver and how the data leaves the sender and has a header added at the each layer and is passed down to the next layer, with a header and CRC going on at Layer 2. The frame goes out on the wire and is received with each layer reading and stripping it’s header until the data reaches the receiving station. Discuss how each layer has to be able to communicate to the layer above & below it as well as to it’s peer layer in the station to which it is communicating. Point out that it uses header for this peer communications. You can also show a bridge and or a router between the two nodes and show how the device will read up to layer 2 or 3 respectively and then rebuild the frame and put it back on the network.
