Levels of White Space

White Space Makes me Happy
It is the space on a spread that is not occupied by text/graphics, but it is not always white. It is “blank” space that gives readers’ eyes a place to rest. It is an isolation element used to create distinct visual units. It can either enhance or detract from the design.

Why 3 Levels of White Space?
Using 3 levels creates clean design, give visual appeal. It unifies & directs. Makes the spread easier to read and allows readers to move quickly from one part to another. Avoids overcrowded design and creates a consistent, coherent look. Pros use lots of white space.
4
Let’s Use these 3 Levels LEVEL 1 Tight = 0-3 pts of separation
Creates a package/group & is used to barely separate related content elements. LEVEL 2 Standard = ¾ pica to 1 pica separation Establishes a consistent standard spacing between elements. LEVEL 3 Expanded = 1 grid/rail of separation For emphasis to isolate/highlight, draw attention to elements.

Planning White Space White space must be planned.
Allow white space around the edges of the page to create breathing room. Graphics should unify, separate or emphasize info on the spread not decorate. Don’t fill empty space with random graphics.

Use You will be exposed to white space consistently throughout the design of your spreads. Make sure your spreads reflect the levels of white space discussed in this lesson.
