Explanations, development of ethical norms in human society Prohibition of behavior *across cultures there is a lot of consistency in norms but wide variety in thinking behind norms. Meta-ethics seeks to help explain variety

3 HOW ABSOLUTE ARE YOUR ETHICS?
Objectivist (morals are absolutes given by a deity or human person) Relativist (morals are human inventions subject to change with individuals/cultures)

4 What motivates our ethical choices?
Psychological EGOISM: self-interests Psychological ALTRUISM: needs/concerns of others Psychological HEDONISM: pleasure Ask yourself: Why do you volunteer? Why do you share notes with a friend? Why do you tell the truth/lie? Why do you keep a secret?

5 OTHER QUESTIONS…. Are ethical choices RATIONAL or EMOTIONAL?
What is GENDER’S role in morality?  Are men & women inherently wired to make different ethical choices?
