Do First Actions: Turn in yesterday’s significant figures worksheet if you didn’t get it stamped yesterday 1. Convert 576 mm to m. Write your answer in scientific notation with only two significant figures.

Agenda Dimensional Analysis Notes Dimensional Analysis Practice

Dimensional Analysis Dimensional analysis is a systematic approach to problem solving that uses conversion factors to move, or convert, from one unit to another (very similar to converting among metric units) A conversion factor is a ratio of equivalent values having different units, and are derived from equality relationships Multiplying a quantity by a conversion factor changes the units of the quantity without changing its value

Dimensional Analysis A conversion factor used in dimensional analysis to accomplish two things: It must cancel one unit It must introduce a new unit While working through a problem, all of the units except the desired unit must cancel In order for units to cancel, one must be in the numerator and one must be in the denominator

Dimensional Analysis Example 1: How many pizzas will you need if 32 people eat 3 slices per person and there are 8 slices in each pizza? What do we know? 32 people (no comparison) 3 slices per person 8 slices per pizza What do we WANT know? How many pizzas

Dimensional Analysis Example 1: How many pizzas will you need if 32 people eat 3 slices per person and there are 8 slices in each pizza?

Dimensional Analysis How many pizzas will you need if 32 people eat 3 slices per person and there are 8 slices in each pizza?

Dimensional Analysis Example 1: How many pizzas will you need if 32 people eat 3 slices per person and there are 8 slices in each pizza? Now do JUST as the equations says… 32 MULTIPLIED by 3; DIVIDED by 8 =

Dimensional Analysis Example 1: How many pizzas will you need if 32 people eat 3 slices per person and there are 8 slices in each pizza?

Dimensional Analysis Example 2: How many eight-packs of water would you need if the 32 people attending the party each had two bottles of water? What do we know? 32 people (no comparison) 2 bottles per person 1 eight-pack = 8 bottles What do we WANT know? How many eight-packs

Dimensional Analysis Example 2: How many eight-packs of water would you need if the 32 people attending the party each had two bottles of water?

Dimensional Analysis Example 2: How many eight-packs of water would you need if the 32 people attending the party each had two bottles of water?

Dimensional Analysis Example 2: How many eight-packs of water would you need if the 32 people attending the party each had two bottles of water? Now do JUST as the equations says… 32 MULTIPLIED by 2; DIVIDED by 8 =

Dimensional Analysis Example 2: How many eight-packs of water would you need if the 32 people attending the party each had two bottles of water?

Dimensional Analysis Practice
Work to complete the practice worksheet SHOW YOUR WORK Raise your hand if you need help but ask you neighbor first

DYL 1. If 2 homework assignments are assigned a day. How many assignments will a student complete in a school year if there are 36 weeks in a school year?
