Healthe Kids Screenings
Referral Identification Rate (for the same population) Total Absences 37% lower average absence rate for students with at least one screening 49% So lets take a deeper dive into what we found with the last two metrics. The first chart represents students screened in both kindergarten and 5th grade. You will see the 1st yellow column shows a 45% referral rate for these kids in kindergarten and the 2nd yellow column representing the same students with a decrease in referrals in the 5th grade. This outcome data validates that early identification of health issues will reduce referrals thereby better position the child for success and reducing the cost to family and the school community. Dr. Nill noticed that much of the population will be referred at some point. The insight is that the children screened early have risks mitigated years ahead, than it could be otherwise – children with unresolved issues could have performance issues or attendance problems before the issue is resolved. It validates screening in kindergarten or earlier is the right thing to do. The data set we were given included nearly 800 students that are currently seniors in HS. Of this data set 65 of those students were screened at least one time. The data set is small, but keep in mind these screenings would have taken place 7-9 years ago, when the HKS program was just getting started. Initial analysis shows that the average rate of absences for students with at least 1 screening is 37% lower than for those who have not been screened. Since attendance is a key determinant in school funding, this data will get the attention of the schools. In the next phase of this project we will utilize our learnings in order to build a larger and more robust data set as we further investigate a direct link between student health and their overall academic success.
