Once you have a basic outline, use elements of SHADING to improve your portrait

9. Shading
Using pencil to depict levels of darkness on paper by applying more dense and darker for dark areas and less dense and lighter for light areas
Out faces have lighter and darker spots
Can also depend on light source
Closer to light source is lighter shade, and further away is darker shade
Help create the illusion of Depth on paper

12. Step 2: Warm and Cool Colours
With your Face shading complete
1. Draw clothing (or add detail to it)
2. Draw a background of some sorts that represents you and your interests/ emotions
DO NOT shade the background or clothing

13. Warm Colours
Red
Yellow
Orange
Pink
Gold
Brown

14. Cool Colours
Blue
Green
Purple
Violet
Gray
Silver
Teal

16. Next
Pick either Warm of Cool colours for your Clothing, and use the other one for your Background
Example: If everything in your Background is coloured in with WARM COLOURS, then everything on your Clothes should be coloured in with COOL COLOURS
And vice versa!

17. Final Product
1. A self portrait where your Face, Skin, and Hair are drawn in ONLY pencil. Use shading appropriate to demonstrate lightness, darkness, and depth
2. Clothes are coloured in with either Warm or Cool colours ONLY
3. Background is coloured in with whatever you DID NOT choose for the clothes
