1 East Asia: Human Geography

2 We will cover the: Brief History, Economics, Religion, Ethnicity,
And human resources of each of these countries: 1) China 2) Mongolia and Taiwan 3) The Koreas 4) Japan

3 China Is the world’s most populated country with 1.4 Billion people Very deep history

4 Brief History China’s history is broken into sections called “Dynasties” * Dynasty: series of rulers from the same family - There are 3 major dynasties:

5 1) Shang Dynasty 1st dynasty of China, started in 1700bc and ruled for 600yrs Over thrown by the Zhou dynasty

6 2) Qin Dynasty Gave China its name: Qin is said like (Chihn)
United many smaller states into China Emperor: Shi Huangdi first started the Great Wall of China lasted 2,000 years

7 3) Han Dynasty Important because they pushed the empire into central Asia Expanded the boundaries of China

8 More History 19th Century China entered the Spheres of Influence
Spheres of Influence: area of the world controlled by Britain, France, Germany, Russia and Japan. China had weak military and European countries carved up parts of china

9 Chinese get mad Chinese people get mad and revolt: Boxer Rebellion 1900 Boxer Rebellion: Chinese militants attack and kill Europeans and Chinese Christians and were put down by a multinational force of 20,000 people. - Dynasties end in 1911

10 Economics 60 % of Chinese people work on the farm.
However only 13% of China is farmable due to terrain

11 China is a Communist country but is unique because it allows for private enterprise
Industrial growth has occurred due to the government allowing people to sell and buy goods. Especially in the Northeast part of China due to an abundant amount of resources. *Shanghai- leads China in manufacturing due to resources

12 Government China is a Communist form of government; however it allows for free enterprise Free Enterprise: buying and selling of private goods

13 2 major political parties
After the boxer rebellion 2 main parties would come to power 1) The Nationalist Party- ran by Sun Yat-Sen 2) Communist Party- ran by Mao Zedong The nationalist party and the Communist party fought for control of China, the Communist party will win control

14 Religion and Ethnic Groups
China is the worlds oldest civilization and holds deep culture and religions 3 major religions:

15 1) Confucianism: Confucius was a Chinese philosopher (551bc to 479bc)
- believed 3 things: A) People should respect their ancestry and the past B) Children obey their parents, adults obey the emperor C) Importance of education in a well ran society

16 2) Taoism: believes in 2 things:
A) Importance of preserving and restoring harmony in the individual and the universe B) Government should leave people alone and do as little as possible

17 3) Buddhism: Came to China from India
Grew to a major religion by 300ad and was influenced by Confucius and Taoism A) Rebirth and the end of the rebirth cycle (re-incarnation)

18 Important Ideas Population in china at one point got out of control. 1.2 billion People The government said families could only have 1 child, but now this does not occur This was stopped due the fact 60% of Chinese families do their own farming
