2 Scientific Notation Format
A number written in scientific notation MUST include two things: A decimal that is greater than or equal to 1 & less than 10. A power of 10

3 Writing in Scientific Notation
58,000 This number can be written in scientific notation by moving the decimal point to the left.

4 5.8000 Move the decimal to the left until the number is less than 10 but greater than or equal to 1.0. Count the number of places you moved the decimal. This will be your exponent.

5 5.8 x 104 Rewrite the number using your decimal X 10 to the power of how many places you moved the decimal.

6 Writing in Scientific Notation (for Pre-Algebra)
This number can be written in scientific notation by moving the decimal point to the right.

7 Move the decimal to the right until the number is less than 10 but greater than or equal to 1.0. Count the number of places you moved the decimal. This will be your exponent. The exponent will be negative.

8 3.7 x 10-6 Rewrite the number using your decimal X 10 to the power of how many places you moved the decimal.
