She was inspired when talking with her housekeeper named Carmen Carmen left her four children 12 years prior to Sonia’s book to work in the United States Carmen’s Husband left her for another woman Many nights she was unable to feed her children

9 Why did Nozario write the Book?
Carmen, at the time, still had not saved enough money to pay a smuggler to bring her children to the US Carmen feared if she is ever was able to save the money, her daughters would be raped along the journey Carmen’s son, after many years, set off to come find his mother

20 Sonia’s Journey Before embarking, she reached out to roughly a dozen church-shelters along the way As she journeyed, she interviewed priests and shelter directors looking for a minor who was making the journey Finally a nun connected her to Enrique

21 Sonia’s Journey She traveled to Nuevo Laredo and shadowed Enrique for two weeks along the Rio Grande Many bandits purposefully steal paper, knowing the kids will write down all the contact information of family in the US Most kids don’t think they need to memorize it Enrique was such a kid

24 Novel Class Discussion
During the class reading of Enrique’s Journey, you will be in groups of roughly 3.  Each group will be responsible for leading the class in an approximately minute discussion over an assigned chapter of the Novel

Leading Discussion A rubric will be posted on my website tomorrow and a hard copy shared in class

26 Presentation You may use  PowerPoint, Slides, or Keynote for your presentation. In it you may want: 1-3 Slides Over Plot 1-2 Slides Over Major Themes in Chapter 1-2 Slides over Important Characters 1-3 Slides over Significant Quotations and what they mean REQUIRED: 5 Thought Provoking Discussion Questions (2 of which should be moral or ethical in nature)

27 Discussion Questions Prepare 5 discussions questions, which refer or are based on the reading from the assigned chapter All questions should be thought provoking, understandable, and engaging At least one of the questions relate or connects to a recent world event, relevant to the chapter.

28 Leading Discussion Each presenter in a group equally leads a part of the discussion Presenters’  actively listen to peer responses, ask follow up questions in order to further develop the idea/insights of responder Presenters share their own responses to some of the discussion questions

Students serving as the audience will be awarded 25 points if they meet the following conditions... Respond to at least four group discussion questions Responses to discussion questions are respectful, well thought out, appropriate, and in depth. Answered loudly. Refrains from sleeping, talking, texting, using iPad, or doing anything else that leads on to not be focused Shows respect to presenters at all times and in all ways
