1 Bell work Thursday October 5, 2012
Name three natural resources. What is the difference between renewable and non-renewable? Put the answers on the back of the bell work sheet

2 Natural Resources Fossil Fuels – Oil, Coal and Natural gas
Food staples – Wheat, rice and corn Land for agriculture Land for housing, transport industry and human leisure activity Land and water for waste disposal

3 Raw Materials Renewable Nonrenewable
Replaced as fast as plants and animals can grow Examples: Timber Fish Crops Solar, hydroelectric, wind Nonrenewable Energy sources and minerals when used are gone forever and can not be replaced Oil Natural gas Coal

4 Natural Resource Usage
Oceans – Overfished Toxic wastes poured into oceans Rivers used as disposal for waste Forests clear cut for timber, paper, land for farming, roads, firewood and charcoal Results on the earth

5 Problems from deforestation
Soil in deforested rainforests – thinning and lost because erosion (washes away) easily Local weather changes - more storms Increased runoff and more flooding Loss of habitats and species extinction More Carbon dioxide into air because less plants

6 Pollution Harm done to environment by release of substances produced by human activities Factories – chemical wastes Agriculture- livestock waste, chemicals Domestic waste – Trash, packaging Nuclear fallout

7 Agriculture Overuse of fertilizers, herbicides & pesticides
Eutrification Fertilizers wash into lakes and streams with run-off and adding nutrients causing excess growth of oxygen depleting plant life and a competition for oxygen so less fish

8 It is estimated that between 1880 and 1980 40% of all tropical rainforests were destroyed
SO Deforestation and agricultural chemical use have caused the most pollution side effects in our ecosystems

9 Ticket out the Door Give three reasons why the forests were destroyed
Give three effects that deforestation has on the environment What two factors have caused the most pollution side effects on our ecosystems?

10 BW – Oct. 9, 2012 Draw a winding river Show the flow of the river
Put a factory on your river Organism A, B, C and D A is before the factory B is right after the factory C is down from b D is farthest down the river Question: Which organism lives in the most polluted water?

11 Greenhouse effect Naturally occurring greenhouse gases act as blanket around the earth and prevent some heat energy escaping into space. Mainly infra-red radiation

12 Greenhouse effects and results
Air pollution by CO2 and Methane has increased the greenhouse effect and is contributing to global warming Consequences – rise in sea level, flooding in low areas, changes in world climate and reduction in crop production

13 Natural vs Human Enhanced

14 Fill in the blanks Solar ______ passes through the _____ and the _____ earth’s surface. The earth ______ heat energy back into the _______. This is mainly_______ radiation . Some of the heat energy is ________ by the greenhouse gases. This causes the _____ to warm up. Warms Absorbed Air Energy Space Radiates Infra-red Atmosphere

15 Conservation Read conservation article
Describe the need for conservation of species and their habitats Conservation of Natural resources Water and non-renewable material including fossil fuels
