Values Teaching and Learning
The Values unit has 5 sessions from which to choose Not all organisations use all 5 sessions, indeed, some use just 3 However the aims and the impact of the Unit can be achieved with any combination from 3 to 5 sessions The important and overriding objectives, regardless of the number of sessions undertaken, are that young people should: Recognise that personal values determine the way they think and behave Values will contribute enormously to their future success Values can change over time Personal values are things that people rarely think about People do things, both good and bad, almost naturally. People are described as being ‘as they are’ The truth of the matter is that people’s natural reactions are a product of their personal values It is important, therefore, that everyone identifies their inner driving force, namely their personal values Knowing what a person thinks is right and wrong and what they think is important to them is crucial in determining how successful they will be This Unit, whether it is 3 or 5 sessions long, will help people identify their own values and hence be able to understand themselves much better The first Session will explore the definition of ‘Values’ 1

Values 1 What do you need to know? What are values?
Why are they important to your success? Teaching and Learning Today's session will focus upon two objectives Firstly discovering what is meant by “values” Secondly, why values are important in determining individual success This session will predominantly involve Independent Learner skills, especially being; ~ Focussed on the concepts that will be raised ~ Individual whereby they think for themselves and not be influenced by others ~ Determined to succeed and learn something new about themselves 2

Green Time Teaching and Learning This is Green Time.
It is a time to get ready for learning Tutor time, involving Learning for Life, is unlike any other lesson, because it involves the tutor group and the tutor and only involves a short period of time The time should not be wasted particularly when challenging activities are involved This session is an introduction to the Values Unit establishing what they are and why they are important for success Information giving by the teacher, and discussion within the group are the main activities during this session The group need to get themselves ready to listen, respond and learn When they are ready proceed to the next slide 3

“It’s the choices that make us who we are.
We can always choose to do what’s right” Teaching and Learning Slide opens with a dramatic picture highlighting a film of which the group may be aware ASK: From which film is the picture taken? The clue is on the slide and the answer is: ‘Spiderman 3’ Do any of the group know the story line for the film? Allow some time for individuals to offer their interpretations The rest of the group should listen Eventually add your own detail along the following lines: Spiderman becomes full of his own importance and allows the ‘values’ of hate and revenge to take over his personality and hence the dark side of Spiderman is revealed Fortunately, his innate values of compassion and care for others enables him to throw off his vengeful, dark personality. He makes a choice. He decides to do what he thinks is right. Others in the film make similar choices. It is a very moralistic film. At that point you can click on to the statements which are actually taken from the last scene in the film when Spiderman re-unites with his girlfriend in the café The key point is that, just as happened in ‘Spiderman 3’, our values guide our choices, and the third click will show this statement Spiderman’s values of honour, respect, duty and compassion determined his thinking, his emotions and hence his actions Before leaving the slide it is worth repeating the fact that: Our Values Guide our Choices In other words they determine how we think, and act. Our values guide our choices 4

What are Values? Values are things that are important to you
e.g. health, freedom, respect, loyalty They are your personal ‘code of conduct’ They guide your choices Confident people know their values Confident people live by their values Teaching and Learning Slide opens with the title. ‘What are Values?’ Before revealing the answer you may wish the group to offer their own ideas first It is important to encourage free thinking and it does not matter if people get the answers wrong Just thinking and bravely making a considered suggestion is not only brave, but it will allow the group to believe that they can participate without fear of being humiliated and such involvement will seriously promote learning and achievement First click will reveal the answer to the question: Values are things that are important to you e.g. health, freedom, respect, loyalty This is followed by four further points of information Second click states: They are your personal ‘code of conduct’ In other words what people do, say and think is determined largely by our value systems Third click emphasises that: They guide your choices This is particularly true about their influence on behaviour. We all have choices and people’s values will determine how they respnd and behave in different situations Fourth click states: Confident people know their values Confidence is a key factor for individual success and successful people are usually very confident about themselves. They are self aware and know what they should do in different circumstances. They know their values and they know their values determine their thoughts and actions Fifth click confirms that: Confident people live by their values Values influence the way you live. If you know your values you will live by your values and you will be confident that what you do will be correct If you have time ask the group for their opinions on these statements 5

What have we learned? Why are values important?
Why should we know our own values? Teaching and Learning It is time to reflect on what has been learned up to this point, hence the PAUSE symbol This is an important activity within the learning framework The group will need to understand that this will happen within each session So by way of recap ask the group what the main TRIC focus was for learning Answer: Independent learning Out of interest the three shadowy figures within the Independent Learner TRIC symbol indicates that when learning independently it involves learning with and from others Then ask the question 1 on the slide: Why are Values important? Hopefully the group will respond with the phrases that have been mentioned earlier Answer: They describe our personal code of conduct. Question 2: ‘Why should we know our values?’ Answer: They show who we are and how we will act. They help determine what sort of person we are. Knowing our values will help us control ourselves and control situations and help us be successful By the end of the session the group should know: i. What is meant by “values” ii. Why they are important to an individual’s level of success PAUSE 6
