1 SOL #11 Oceans

2 Parts of the Ocean Floor
Continental shelves Continental slopes Abyssal plains Seamounts

3

4 Seafloor Spreading Occurs at mid-ocean ridge
Related to plate tectonics Old seafloor is closer to shore—young seafloor is closer to the ridge

5 Waves Surface waves are caused by wind
Friction near the shore slows waves down Crest Highest part of wave Trough lowest part of wave

6 Tides Daily rise/fall of water level
Caused by gravitational pull of moon and sun Spring tides=higher than normal Neap tides=lower than normal

7

8 Upwelling Cold, nutrient rich water from deep ocean comes up to surface Creates biological activity Marine organisms feed off of nutrients Good fishing grounds!

9 Currents Large systems in ocean that move water in patterns
Created by differences in temp and salinity Gulf Stream Current that runs along Eastern USA Warm water moves toward the poles Cold water moves toward the equator Convection

10

11 Oceans & Climates Stored ocean heat drives much of Earth’s weather
Climate near ocean milder than interior Ocean is largest reservoir of heat on surface

12 Resources Source of food and mineral deposits Recreation
Oil made from dead marine organisms and frequently found under seafloor Recreation Transportation

13 Human Impact Pollution Over-fishing Chemicals from runoff
Sedimentation Waste disposal Over-fishing Depleting seafood Fish farming has been a way to help replenish oceans

14 Estuary Nature’s Nursery
Fresh & salt water mix=salinity varies making biological activity high Chesapeake Bay
