4. Hitler Born in 1889 in Austria
Father initially took mother’s name, Schickelgruber, but he later changed it to Hitler
“Heil Schickelgruber?”
Father dies in 1903, mother in 1907

5. 1900
1900 Hitler entered prep school but was a poor student and became interested in art
1906 Hitler is rejected when he applies to art school.
He can’t draw human faces well.

6. Hitler Artistic ability or lack thereof.

7. Before WWI
Spends six years in Vienna, almost penniless. Depends on Jewish charities to live.
Despite having Jewish friends, he starts to blame Jews for his trouble.
In 1913, he is rejected by the Austrian Army as “unfit…too weak.”

8. Hitler in WWI Enlisted in the German army
Fought in France and received two Iron Crosses for bravery
1916, wounded by an enemy shell and Spends time in the hospital
1918, temporarily blinded by
mustard gas
War ends 1918

9. Germany is forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles Terms of the treaty
Germany had to pay for the cost of the war
Germany lost large areas of land
Limits are placed on the army and navy

10. World War I Unfair Blame
No side actually “won” the first world war.
All sides got together to try and figure out peace.
The agreement pushed the blame unfairly on Germany, giving blame and messing with their geography.
This did not make Germans happy.

11. After World War I
Hitler found out about Germany’s defeat while recovering from gas attack.
Hitler was reassigned by the army to teach about the evils of communism and other “anti-German” behavior.
He was then sent as a spy to a German Workers party meeting.
This backfired badly.

12. Hitler joins the German Workers Party in 1919 and increases the number of members
Party becomes very Anti-semitic
Jews were blamed for inflation, unemployment, and losing the war
Name is changed to National Socialist German Workers Party (NAZI)—many dissatisfied Germans join

13. NAZIS Try to Grab Power
October 1923, Hitler and the Nazis threaten to march on Berlin to rid the country of Communists and Jews
November, 1923, 2000 Nazis attempt to overthrow the government in Munich
Attempt fails, Hitler is jailed, dozens are killed

14. Mein Kampf Hitler is sentenced to 5 years but only serves 9 months
Writes Mein Kampf in prison
Mostly about his life
Attacks Democrats, Communists,

Hitler says Russia must be taken over to provide space for the Germans
Germans are the master race, everyone else is sub-human

16. Hitler Takes Power
Hitler Begins to speak to mass audiences about the danger of Jews and Communists
Hitler makes a deal with Paul von Hindenburg to share political power in 1933
The Reichstag is burned. Communists are blamed for increasing Hitler’s power

17. World War II Begins
Germany annexes Austria, and eastern Czech Republic (Sudetenland) in early 1938
Annexes the rest of the Czech Republic in 1938
A treaty with the USSR divides Poland between Germany and the USSR
September 1, 1939, Germany invaded western Poland setting off World War II

18. Holocaust During WWII 1940-Auschwitz concentration
camp opened in Poland
1940-Warsaw and Krakow
ghettos are closed off, trapping
500,000 Jews
1941- First Jews are sent into forced labor camps

19. Summer, 1941-Hitler
orders the SS to begin the
Final Solution or the removal of

20. US Involvement
Important to note that the US did not enter the war to stop the holocaust or even to fight Germany at all.
The US entered because of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
After the US declared war on Japan, Germany (who was allied w/ Japan) declared war on the US.

21. June More than 1,000,000 have been killed by German forces, perhaps 1,000,000 others by countries allied with Germany
Deportation of Jews from all over Europe to Polish concentration camps

22. Hitler and the War
Hitler conquered France and most of eastern Europe by 1940
Hitler’s planned invasion of Britain fails
Germany invades the USSR despite a peace treaty with them in June 1941
War in Russia goes badly, Germans are defeated at Moscow and Stalingrad.
German army suffers massive losses

U.S. and British allies invade and conquer North Africa, Sicily, Italy and France by 1944
Russians are killing millions of German soldiers and destroying massive amounts of war materials
Germany is being bombed 24 hours a day by British and American bombers
Assassination attempt on Hitler fails

24. End of NAZI Regime German (SS) forces begin killing record
numbers of prisoners because
they know the war is lost and they
want no witnesses to the
Holocaust.
January, 1945-Soviet troops liberate
Auschwitz
Over 2,000,000 have been killed,
about 1,500,000 of them Jews
American and British forces liberate concentration camps in Germany

25. End of Hitler Soviet troops in invade Berlin, Germany
Hitler, his wife, Eva Braun and others commit suicide
By the end, over 6 million Jews lost their life to
the “Final Solution.”
The new German government surrenders to the Allies
Concentration camp officials are put on trial, escape to other parts of the world and are captured by police

Many survivors flee to Palestine and new country Israel (This doesn’t exactly go smoothly)
U.S. takes many survivors
Europe’s Jewish communities are empty
Jews vow to never allow anything like this to happen again
Israel adopts “Never Again” as its slogan
