Hitler Born in 1889 in Austria
Father initially took mother’s name, Schickelgruber, but he later changed it to Hitler “Heil Schickelgruber?” Father dies in 1903, mother in 1907

1900 1900 Hitler entered prep school but was a poor student and became interested in art 1906 Hitler is rejected when he applies to art school. He can’t draw human faces well.

Before WWI Spends six years in Vienna, almost penniless. Depends on Jewish charities to live. Despite having Jewish friends, he starts to blame Jews for his trouble. In 1913, he is rejected by the Austrian Army as “unfit…too weak.”

Fought in France and received two Iron Crosses for bravery 1916, wounded by an enemy shell and Spends time in the hospital 1918, temporarily blinded by mustard gas War ends 1918

World War I Unfair Blame
No side actually “won” the first world war. All sides got together to try and figure out peace. The agreement pushed the blame unfairly on Germany, giving blame and messing with their geography. This did not make Germans happy.

After World War I Hitler found out about Germany’s defeat while recovering from gas attack. Hitler was reassigned by the army to teach about the evils of communism and other “anti-German” behavior. He was then sent as a spy to a German Workers party meeting. This backfired badly.

Party becomes very Anti-semitic Jews were blamed for inflation, unemployment, and losing the war Name is changed to National Socialist German Workers Party (NAZI)—many dissatisfied Germans join

NAZIS Try to Grab Power October 1923, Hitler and the Nazis threaten to march on Berlin to rid the country of Communists and Jews November, 1923, 2000 Nazis attempt to overthrow the government in Munich Attempt fails, Hitler is jailed, dozens are killed

US Involvement Important to note that the US did not enter the war to stop the holocaust or even to fight Germany at all. The US entered because of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After the US declared war on Japan, Germany (who was allied w/ Japan) declared war on the US.

End of NAZI Regime German (SS) forces begin killing record
numbers of prisoners because they know the war is lost and they want no witnesses to the Holocaust. January, 1945-Soviet troops liberate Auschwitz Over 2,000,000 have been killed, about 1,500,000 of them Jews American and British forces liberate concentration camps in Germany

Hitler, his wife, Eva Braun and others commit suicide By the end, over 6 million Jews lost their life to the “Final Solution.” The new German government surrenders to the Allies Concentration camp officials are put on trial, escape to other parts of the world and are captured by police
