Training Objectives MnDOT’s training curriculum is influenced by the best practice of the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) – Foundations in Public Participation Learning Objectives: What authentic public engagement is and what it is not MnDOT’s public engagement approach and public engagement policy How the public is identified and when/why it may not always be engaged Definitions for public engagement, public information and public relations IAP2 Spectrum of Public Engagement + Core Values of Participation The successive five-step process of public engagement that works Understanding audiences and getting your point across

Inaugural Course Held Dec. 4 – 5, 2018 at the Arden Hills Training Center Included 30+ planners, project managers and public engagement All districts represented All agreed or strongly agreed that the class met its objectives Comments included: Healthy, deep discussion Great course – from theory to practical application The real-life case study (Hwy 47, St. Francis) was energizing Valued the interactive scenarios and techniques to determine level of public engagement Valued the dialogue & perspectives from various parts of MNDOT (districts offices, disciplines) The techniques were not presented as a one-size-fits-all approach Valued the examples of how to apply the principles to the transportation sector The materials and reference content will be useful in the future as I engage public

Next (Planned) Opportunity
The next “Public Engagement That Works” class training will not be offered as originally planned (May or June) as timing is not feasible PECS and Project Management (co-sponsors) are now looking at October 2019 The dates are either Tues/Wed Oct. 2 and 3 OR Tues/Wed Oct. 9 and 10 The class will be held at MnDOT’s Training Center (D3) in St. Cloud John Godec from the Participation Company will return as trainer In addition to fundamentals, the curriculum will include more collaboration and workshopping on solving some of MnDOT’s “real life” public engagement/public relations issues
