Initial Protests January 31, 1961
Eighteen students from Friendship College got together to protest Civil Rights. They gathered in front of McCrory’s Variety Store and were met by the police. The students had signs and walked up and down the street protesting.

Inside McCrory’s Store
Ten Protesters then sat at the counter of McCryoy’s store. At 11:30 the ten men were arrested and taken to jail.

“Jail No Bail” Before the protests began the students agreed to not accept bail. Of the ten arrested nine did just that. While inside jail the students became known as the friendship nine. On Februray 2nd they were all sentenced to thirty days.

Influence of the Friendship Nine
The students new system of Jail No Bail was adopted throughout the country. Even more protests began throughout the country. 2007 Historical Marker Dedication
