Day 161 – Modelling a tree trunk
2
Introduction When we see a tree, we can think of it a being composed of numerous geometric figures fused together. With this, we can make they say measure its size and describe its shape. This concept of representing a surface or an object in terms of geometric figures in very common in graphics designs, a computer application. It is also widely used in arts where a picture of a tree is modeled in terms of geometric figures to bring out some appealing and admirable picture. In this lesson, we are going to model a tree trunk. Identify all the objects used in modeling. Suggest any other figures that may be used instead of the one(s) used.
3
Vocabulary Modelling Modelling is used here to imply using different images to come up with a design of a final image. For our case, we are using a geometric figures to come up with a design of a tree.
4
Modelling a tree trunk A tree is a dimensional tree object; hence, if we want to model it, we use a 3-dimensional figure. The most common images used are the regular and irregular sphere, cylinders, cones, cylinders, pyramids and prisms among others. We will come up with a tree trunk they try to find out the kind of figures used.
5
We can now identify the objects used to model the tree trunk.

6
From the figure above, 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are frustum of rectangular or square based pyramid, 2 is a cuboid, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 are cylinders.
7
Example Explain why we cannot use rectangles, circles and triangles to model a tree trunk. Solution The rectangle circle and triangles are plane figures, 2 dimensional figures, therefore, they cannot be used to model a tree trunk because, to the contrary, it is a three dimensional figure.
