1 Aim: How does the cell reproduce?
HW # 13 Text – read pages 244 – 249 Write out Q. 1-5 page 249

2 K-W-L What do you know, want to know about cell division?
After you have completed this chart individually, work with your team and pick out the outstanding question. Questions are put on the board and on chart paper for future reference.

3 Task Arrange the cell according to how you think the cell reproduces Questions: What do you notice about the first and last cell? How are they the same/different ?

4 How does the nucleus direct the cell to reproduce ?
Interphase Prophase Metaphase We know that cancer is related to the cell cycle. Anaphase Telophase Interphase

5 Part I Information Gathering: the story of Sheena
Read the story of Sheena Gather information on cancer Fill out the worksheet and use your text as a reference pg 245

6 What information did you find about the cell cycle?
Each group will answer one question Prentice Hall text book pg

7 Explain what happens to the cell and the chromosomes during each phase.

8 Historical Perspective of Cancer
What do we know about how long cancer has been around? Look to see what was written in the history books. Review the News Alert Videos and have students individually fill in the chart on worksheet that corresponds to this video. Give students 5-7 minutes to discuss their answers with their group. Create a classroom “Understanding Cancer” chart by discussing answers with the whole group.

9 Aim: What are the changes in the nucleus during cell division?
Class Lecture Notes

10 Each cell is identical to the mother cell
Artificially colored bacteria cells dividing by mitosis, as seen using a scanning electron microscope Daughter cells have to be identical to the mother cell. What determines traits? (chromosomes) Therefore the chromosomes have to be identical. How does that happen?

11 Chromosome duplication
Chromosomes can be seen when they double One chromosome makes more of itself to form the duplicate chromosome, identical to itself. What is the chromosome made of? (DNA) So the DNA has to duplicate itself to make more exactly the same.

12 DNA's Feat: Making Two Out of One

13 Two Strands Of The Same Chromosome Have Formed

14 Mitosis Start with one cell
End with two cells each with the exact number of chromosomes
