1. Write a half to full page describing this picture or telling a story from the perspective of a person in the picture

2. Get into groups based on the social justice movement you are most interested in.
Based on what you’ve learned from your own research, and the article I gave you in class, make an informative poster about this social justice group.
It must include:
The name of the social justice group
What group of people is discriminated against
The discriminatory treatment that group is protesting
Examples of what people in that group did to protest
The goals of that group.

4. Practice Paraphrasing: a Review
The Basic Rules:
Must keep the same ideas as the original text
Analyze the sentences you choose to paraphrase—you must completely understand them to put them in your own words!
Do NOT use the same word choice (common nouns) OR sentence structures (including phrases and clauses)
Proper nouns, like names or cities are okay
Must cite source (attributive tag and in-text citation)—you should have a works cited at the end, and right after it, put the author’s name and page number.

5. Paraphrasing: What it looks like:
Original quote from the text: “I was a ‘young adult’ when I wrote The Outsiders although it was not a genre at the time. It's an interesting time of life to write about, when your ideals get slammed up against reality and you must compromise” (Sozio 1).
Same information after being correctly paraphrased: I composed The Outsiders when I was a teenager. At that time no literature about teens existed, so I decided to write my own story. I wanted to express what being a teenager was like at that time. I discovered that my hopes and dreams would not necessarily turn out as I had imagined. I had to adjust to make them come true. (Sozio 1).

Original quote from the text: ”The Outsiders had a small printing in paperback and was sold at drugstores — hardly indicative of the success it would later garner. Just as it was about to be pulled from shelves, a surge in sales to schoolteachers brought the book back from near death. Teachers had discovered the book and realized their students connected to the material. Sales continued to escalate, giving Hinton fame, and leading to her being deemed “the voice of youth” by many critics.”

Decide on the specific topic you will be researching WITHIN your social justice group, and write that topic next to your name on the sign up sheet
