1 Titration Lab Practice and Calculations

2 Evaluation/Assessment:
Objective: Today I will be able to: Use correct lab technique to titrate an acid Calculate the concentration of an unknown acid using titration Evaluation/Assessment: Informal assessment: Monitoring student performance as they complete the titration lab and calculations Formal assessment: analyzing students titration lab calculations and exit ticket Common Core Connection Value Evidence Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision

3 Lesson Sequence Evaluate: Warm – Up
Engage and Explore: Titration Lab Practice Explain: Titration Calculations Elaborate: Titration Lab Practice with Calculations Evaluate: Exit Ticket

4 Warm - Up What does it mean to be a conjugate base?
Predict the products and identify the acid, base, conjugate acid, and conjugate base: HSO4-(aq) + CO32-(aq)  SO42-(aq) + HCO3-(aq)

5 Objective Today I will be able to:
Use correct lab technique to titrate an acid Calculate the concentration of an unknown acid using titration

6 Homework Tonight’s HW: Conjugate Acid Base WS

7 Agenda Warm – Up Conjugate Acids & Bases Titration Lab Practice
Titration Lab Practice with Calculations Exit Ticket

8 Titration Lab Technique

9 Titration Lab Technique
Work in the lab with a partner At most you have 3 trials to complete You pick your best one! Must wear goggles, aprons and closed toe shoes Take 5 ml of HCl Titrate it with NaOH Show Mr. Klotz your titrated sample EVERY sample even if you want to do more Dispose of titrated HCl/ NaOH in the sink with excess water Do not refill the buret. Call Mr. Klotz over if you need more NaOH Pass out worksheets and have them cross out the backside

10 REMEMBER! This is what your solution should look like

11 Titration Lab with Calculations

12 Titration Lab with Calculations
Use the the technique you practiced yesterday Record the data for the quantity of NaOH used and the concentration to help you determine the unknown concentraton of HCl Calculate your percent error Repeat if you got a high % error or you over titrate

13 Exit Ticket Reflection:
What will I do to be successful in the titration lab practical next class?
