2 AFFIRMATIVE AND NEGATIVE SENTENCES

3 EXERCISE I He is rich. He is not poor. The river is shallow.
The river is not deep. He is sometimes lazy. He is not always active.

4 I was doubtful whether he would marry her.
I was not sure that he would marry her. He is too proud to listen to me. He is so proud that he won’t listen to me. As soon as we had started, it began to rain. No sooner had we started than it began to rain.

5 Anil is taller than Vijay.
Vijay is not as tall as Anil. This is the best book on cricket. No other book on cricket is as good as this.

6 EXERCISE II Atul is sometimes foolish. Atul is not always wise.
Karim is stronger than Abdul. Abdul is not as strong as Karim. This sum is too difficult for me to do. This sum so difficult that I cannot do it.

7 I’m doubtful whether she will agree to it.
I’m not sure that she will agree to it. Shakespeare is the greatest of English poets. No other English poet is as great as Shakespeare. As soon as we had arrived, we had to go back. No sooner had we arrived than we had to go back. Tom is as clever as Dick. Dick is not cleverer than Tom.

8 All were present at the meeting.
No one was absent at the meeting. He failed to keep his promise. He did not succeed in keeping his promise. The juggler performed his feats nicely. The juggler did fail to perform his feats nicely. As soon as you finish your work, you visit me. No sooner do you finish your work than you visit me.

9 He denied beating the boy.
He did not admit beating the boy. The answer is wrong. The answer is not correct. She admitted stealing the ring. She did not deny stealing the ring. The sum is so difficult that I cannot do it. The sum is too difficult for me to do.

10 EXERCISE III He didn’t pass the examination.
He failed the examination. No one but a fool would do it. Only a fool would do it. Rekha is not so pretty as Padma. Padma is prettier than Rekha.

11 No other man in this town is so rich as Mahadevan.
Mahadevan is richest man in this town. No sooner had he seen me than he ran away. As soon as he had seen me, he ran away. There is no smoke without fire. Where there is smoke, there is fire.

12 You have never treated her fairly.
You have always treated her unfairly. If you don’t run, you can’t catch the bus. If you run, you can catch the bus. None was absent at the meeting. Everyone was present at the meeting.

13 I will never forget that terrible day.
I will always remember that terrible day. We do not deny that we went to see a film. We admit that we went to see a film.

14 . INTERROGATIVE AND ASSERTIVE SENTENCES

15 Interrogative sentences are questions
Interrogative sentences are questions. Sometimes a question is asked not for an answer but to make effective assertion or statement. For example: Who does not love children? We do not expect any answer to the question. The speaker is only asserting the fact that ‘Everybody loves children’. Questions of this type are called ‘Rhetorical Questions’ and they can be changed into assertive and assertive sentences can be changed into questions.

16 Can I ever forget his help?
I can never forget his help. Who does not know Mahatma Gandhi? Everybody knows Mahatma Gandhi. What though we miss the train? It doesn’t matter if we miss the train.

17 Is not prevention better than cure?
-Prevention is better than cure. Why waste time in playing cards? -It is indeed foolish to waste time in playing cards.

18 EXERCISE I Is this the way that you should talk to your mother?
This is not the way that you should talk to your mother. Is it not bad to bet on horses? It is really bad to bet on horses. Do we live to eat? We don’t live to eat.

19 Can I ever forget those happy days?
I can never forget those happy days. What though the battle be lost? It does not matter if the battle is lost. Is there anything better than a busy life? There is nothing better than a busy life.

20 How can I be dishonest? I cannot be dishonest. Who can bear such cruelty? No one can bear such cruelty. Who can climb the sky? No one can climb the sky. Can any man eat grass? No man can eat grass.

21 Will he ever do my work? He will never do my work. Will he ever become the Captain of the team? He will never become the Captain of the team. Why eat so much? It is no use eating so much.

22 What if you are the son of a Governor?
It does not matter much even though you are the son of a Governor. Who does not want to be rich? Everyone wants to be rich.

23 EXERCISE II Everyone wants to be happy. Who does not want to be happy?
An honest man can become rich. Can an honest man not become rich? This is not the kind of dress to wear in school. Is this the kind of dress to wear in school?

24 There is nothing nobler than love.
Is there anything nobler than love? They are not so stupid as to trust you. Are they so stupid that they should trust you? The leopard cannot change his spots. Can the leopard change his spots?

25 We can never forget our national heroes.
Can we ever forget our national heroes? He will never become the Captain of the team. Will he ever become the Captain of the team?

27 How lovely the park is! The park is very lovely. What a good boy Mahesh is! Mahesh is a good boy. How fast he speaks! He speaks very fast.

28 What funny stories he tells!
He tells very funny stories. How he shouts! He shouts loudly. How hot! It is very hot.

29 EXERCISE I What a clever girl you are! You are a very clever girl.
How pleased he was to see us! He was very pleased to see us. How beautiful this garden is! This garden is very beautiful.

30 What a large nose he has! He has a very large nose. How terrible! It is very terrible./ It was really terrible. What horrible music! It is very horrible music. How he snores! He snores very loudly.

31 What a piece of work is man!
Man is indeed a great piece of work. How quickly he walks! He walks very quickly. What a good idea! It was indeed a great idea. /It is indeed a great idea. How idiotic my peon is! My peon is very idiotic.

32 What a giant he appears to be!
He appears to be great giant. Alas! Keats died so young. It is sad that Keats died so young. Well done! You deserve all praise. It is good to note that you deserve all praise. This is a very interesting book. What an interesting book this is!

33 The street is very dirty.
How dirty the street is! He is a very nice boy. What a nice boy he is! Gopal writes very beautifully. How beautifully Gopal writes! The dog is a very faithful animal. What a faithful animal the dog is!

34 The holiday has passed very quickly.
How quickly the holiday has passed! It is very cold. How cold it is! She tells very funny stories. What funny stories she tells! My mistress is very idiotic. How idiotic my mistress is!
