By tracing His steps, will we learn to follow?
The 1st Year By tracing His steps, will we learn to follow?
2
John 1:35-37 The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. 36 As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!” 37 When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.
3
What is a disciple? Disciple- “A follower or student of a teacher or leader.” (Oxford’s) Disciple- “One who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another.” (Webster's)
4
John 1:38-39 Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them. They replied, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” 39 “Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.
5
Their experience with Jesus caused a reaction
They didn’t want to take John’s word for it, they wanted to see for themselves if Jesus really was the Messiah. Their experience with Jesus caused a reaction
6
John 1:40-42 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. 41 Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ” ). 42 Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name
7
John 1:40-42 is Simon, son of John—but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter” ).
8
Andrew had to bring his brother to meet Jesus
Simon’s encounter with Jesus changed his name. When you have an encounter with the Messiah, those who seek Him are changed.

John 1:43-46 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come, follow me.” 44 Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown. 45 Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son

John 1:43-46 of Joseph from Nazareth.” 46 “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” “Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied.

Jesus asks Philip to follow him, and what does Philip do?
He goes and tells someone else
12
John 1:47-50 As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel—a man of complete integrity.” 48 “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.”49 Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus
13
John 1:47-50 asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”
14
You will see greater things than this!
Are you ready for an adventure?
15
Some questions for us to answer.
Will we be His disciples? To what extent will we follow Him? Will we give up everything to follow?

Matthew 10:24-39 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household! 26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that

Matthew 10:24-39 will not be made known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to

Matthew 10:24-39 the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. 32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in

I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn “ ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— 36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ 37 “Anyone who loves their

Matthew 10:24-39 father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.

Are you willing to give up everything to be His disciple?
