2 Current policy Each faculty is assigned a mentor on letter of offer
No follow up

3 Upcoming COM policy Every faculty at the assistant and associate level is assigned at least one mentor Mentors – mentees meeting at least twice a year. Mentoring meeting reports are included in yearly evaluation Mentoring teams are encouraged with mentors with a portfolio of skills Clinical / research specialty Professional development Life coach, work – life balance

4 Different levels of mentorship
Guide: faculty with a deep understanding of the institution at all levels. Typically chairs, vice-chairs, division chiefs. Will help you on how to do something, where to find a resource, etc

5 Different levels of mentorship
Sponsor: Senior faculty who will advocate for you at all levels. Critical for faculty who are shy about self-promotion

6 Different levels of mentorship
True mentors: Cannot be your supervisor Can be outside your department Can change with evolving needs Must establish a nurturing learning relationship with mentee

7 On the mentor side Mentorship is an integral part of academic medicine
No specific effort assignment Should be integrated into the education mission, and evaluated during annual evaluation Mentor training should be available (tools being developed) Dept. leadership team will ensure that “popular” mentors are not overburdened

8 What we need to do? Wait for COM final guidelines
Understand what are the specific needs of the Pathology faculty Revisit with each faculty their mentor or mentoring team assignment Work on mentoring meeting report
