Challenges to Growth During Adolescence
Accepting Ourselves
2
God loves us, and we are created in His image.
It’s important to accept who we are. If our own idea of our value comes from our abilities (such as singing or playing basketball) or how we look, we’ll never be quite happy, because those things change. Only God and His love for us are unchanging. We all have dignity. Dignity is that unique worth and value that we possess simply for being human, for being created like God. This dignity is something we all have, no matter what. It doesn’t depend on how much money we have or what country we were born in. Our dignity doesn’t depend on any of those things. It doesn’t even increase because of the good we do or decrease because of the mistakes we make. We have dignity simply because we are created in the image and likeness of God.

Our Need for Others On coming into the world, human beings are not equipped with everything they need for developing their bodily and spiritual life. They need others. Differences appear tied to age, physical abilities, intellectual or moral aptitudes, the benefits derived from social commerce, and the distribution of wealth. The “talents” are not distributed equally. These differences belong to God’s plan, who wills that each receive what he or she needs from others, and that those endowed with particular “talents” share the benefits with those who need them. These differences encourage and often oblige persons to practice generosity, kindness, and sharing of goods; they foster the mutual enrichment of cultures.
