1 Starter What is race? Bonus Question: What is your favorite color of M&M’s to eat?

2 Ethnicity and State Shapes
CANDY VOCABULARY Ethnicity and State Shapes

3 Candy Vocabulary Open your bags and dump them on the paper.
Separate the candy into groups of different colors. These will be your RACES. Within some of the races you will find differences. Separate those from each other. These groups represent ETHNICITY. They share cultural traditions such as language and religion.

4 RACE = same color on outside ETHNICITIES
Different on the inside (language, beliefs, religion, etc.)

5 Candy Vocabulary Circle two of the different groups with a pen or marker. With a boundary they now have legal attachment to each other and become a NATIONALITY. Because only one color is in each circle, the ethnic boundaries coincide with the national boundaries creating a NATION-STATE. Label this and provide a real world example.

6 Candy Vocabulary Each candy is proud to be the color they are and feel loyalty and devotion to their nation. Put all the candies in one group as close as possible to each other – draw a circle around this group and draw arrows toward the center. Label this as NATIONALISM. Since Nationalism draws them together, label as a CENTRIPETAL FORCE.

7 Candy Vocabulary Draw a big circle around two ethnic/racial groups. These two now share a common space or territory peacefully and recognize each other as distinct nations – Label this as a MULTINATIONAL STATE. Belgium is a good example, with the Flemings and the Walloons.

8 Candy Vocabulary Draw another circle around three color groups and mix them all together – Label this as a MULTIETHNIC STATE. (none of the groups control one specific region – thus not a “nation.”) Above that circle write BEFORE

9 Candy Vocabulary Make another circle that looks just like the last one, but separate all the candies into different areas within that common space. Draw arrows from the center of the circle to the groups. Label this as an example of APARTHEID or SEGREGATION (Separate but equal). Above this circle, write AFTER

10 Candy Vocabulary Draw a dotted line around one of the three groups and then return those candies within the dotted line to the bag. You have just participated in ETHNIC CLEANSING or GENOCIDE. Label this on the AFTER circle. Do you think one kind of M&Ms or skittles are better than others? Which one? If yes, this is RACISM!

11 Candy Vocabulary Organize one of the groups into a long, skinny shape and draw a border tightly around it. This is now an “ELONGATED STATE.” Label your elongated state and provide one real world example. Also provide one positive and one negative of being an elongated state.

12 Candy Vocabulary Organize one of the groups into a tightly grouped circle and draw a border. This is now an “COMPACT STATE.” Label your compact state and provide one real world example. Also provide one positive and one negative of being an compact state.

13 Candy Vocabulary Organize one of the groups into an a ball and then make a singular leg that emerges and draw a border. This is now a “PRORUPTED STATE.” Label your prorupted state and provide one real world example. Also provide one positive and one negative of being an prorupted state.

14 Candy Vocabulary Organize one of the groups into a shape. Take another one of the groups and completely surround the first group. The one on the outside is now a “PERFORATED STATE.” Label your perforated state and provide one real world example. Also provide one positive and one negative of being an perforated state.

15 Candy Vocabulary Organize one of the groups into a group of islands.
This is now a “FRAGMENTED STATE.” Label your fragmented state and provide one real world example. Also provide one positive and one negative of being an fragmented state.
