8.6 Inequalities Objective: Students will be able to write an inequality given a statement. They will then be able to graph an inequality on a number line.
2
Information Inequality: inequality sign instead of = sign.
Signs of inequality < less than > greater than ≥ greater/equal to ≤ less/equal to Solution of inequality: numbers that prove inequality.
3
Graphing Inequalities
4 Graphing Tips: < or > open circle Ex: ≤ or ≥ closed circle Ex: at most or no more than = ≤ at least = ≥
4
Write inequalities Stadium can seat up to 52,000. John can eat more than 6 slices of pizza. I hit at most 12 home runs. Jake can eat more than 20 candy bars. A cat weighs less than 10 pounds.
5
Writing Inequalities Greatest weight person can lift is 220lbs.
John ate more than 53 m&m’s. I average at least 23pts a game. Save at least $50 on coupon Tow truck can tow up to 7700 lbs. The DVD cost s more than $14.
6
Check solutions Check to see if the numbers are solutions to the following inequality. 5x > 4 4 -2 8 5
7
St. Solutions Which numbers are solutions: -5x < 30 -9 3 5 6
8
Graphing Inequalities
x < 5 m ≥ 12 z ≥ -6 h < 15
9
Graphing Inequalities
x < 10 m ≥ 1 z ≥ -2 h < 5
10
Graphing compound inequalities
x > 7 and x ≤ 12 c < 3 or c > 10
11
Given the graph, write an inequality
12
Quiz Write an inequality showing I have at least six hats.
Draw a number line and then graph y ≥ 6 Write an inequality for the problem below:
