Bell-ringer What do you know about Korea?
Where is Korea located? How might this location impact Japan? Think about these questions and pair with a student around you. Discuss with them these questions. You will have only 2 minutes! Be ready to share!
3
Goals Describe and evaluate the importance of Korea to Japan and China by answering questions with 100% participation. Summarize the invasions of Korea by Japan, China, and Mongols by creating a graphic organizer with 90% accuracy.
4
Essential Questions Where is Korea located?
How did Korea influence Japan?
5
The location of Korea What: Korea is the size of the state of Minnesota. Where: Lies on a peninsula in East Asia near Japan Why important: Served as a bridge between China and Japan (why important?) Important because Korea developed into a combination of both cultures! Do you think there are a lot of generalizations about Korea?
6
Physical Geography of Korea
What: south and west have plains, east and north have mountains. Where: surrounded by water on three sides and attached to China Importance: Adopted features of Japan and China
7
Early Koreans Who: Tangun, son of a bear and god.
What: Founded the first Korean kingdom Importance: Came from Nomads and organized into tribes and Shamanism Came to Korea from northern or central Asia (Mongolia). Lived in scattered villages with NO central government. How might they get along then? Practiced Shamanism=thought to communicate with the spirits, performed rituals to get help from spirits.
8
Three Kingdoms What: Koguryo, Paekche, and Silla after pushed China out Why: Used Chinese ideas (Buddhism, Confucianism, Chinese writing) Earliest known kingdom was found in 2333BC. China came and took Korea over in 109 BC and then Korea pushed them out in 200s AD. After the Chinese left, three kingdoms emerged. Koguryo= north, Paekche= southwest, and Sill= southeast. During this period, Korean people used Chinese customs and advancements. Each Kingdom was ruled by a king with nobles by his side. Influences from Japan also came to Korea. Trade and education were the most important. Koreans also developed their own culture= built observatories, cave art paintings etc. Silla kingdom became the most dominate with the Chinese help. After defeating the other kingdoms (660s AD), there was a time of peace and improvements to life happened. Irrigation systems, land, trade, etc. Examinations used to created jobs and encouraged the arts. How could the Koreans view the skies? How did outside influences affect Korea? What did the Silla kingdom have in common with periods of China?
9
Korean Civilization What: Silla collapses and Wang Kon finds the Koryo Kingdom Why: set up a code of laws and exams (935 AD) General Wang Kon defeated other nobles fighting for power. He united all of Korea. His dynasty followed the Chinese model of government (central gov.) and created a set of laws and new exams for civil service. Buddhism and Confuscianism continued to spread and printing/arts grew. Unforunately, the Koryo dynasty had to deal with the Mongols, who took over and treated them the same as they did everyone else. (which was how?)
10
Yi Dynasty What: Dynasty founded by Yi Song-gye
Why: set up modern Korea After the decline of the Mongols, a general took over, Yi Song-jye. During his reign, the capital of Seoul was founded, practiced neo-confuscianism, and opened public schools. One of the greatest leaders in this time was Sejong. He made water clocks, sundials, and globes (interested in science). He spread literacy, and created a Korean alphabet (different from Japan or China). Then in 1592, Japan invaded but Korea won against them because of China and new iron covered ships. But fighting the Japanese destroyed the land and villages declined. Finally China invaded from the North and took over and had them pay tribute.

Your task For a grade, create a three columned chart to compare what happened to Korea when the Chinese, the Mongols, and the Japanese invaded them. Write down in each column what happened to Korea. (example on the board) Then under the chart, answer the following question: Why do you think China influenced Korea before Japan did?
