Step 1: Hitler becomes Chancellor 30 January 1933
The Nazis were the biggest party in the Reichstag by 1932 They were constantly trying to manipulate the decision making process President Hindenburg offered Hitler the job of vice-chancellor and he refused Two right wing politicians convinced Hindenburg to appoint Hitler Chancellor This made him the head of the Reichstag (parliament)

Reasons for Hitler becoming Chancellor
As the leader of the biggest party in the Reichstag (NSDAP had 13.7m votes in 1932), Hitler was the most likely candidate to be chancellor A public letter was published in a newspaper where Hitler flattered Hindenburg and also leading right wing politicians offered their support to Hitler The chancellorship was a job nobody wanted – the previous few chancellors had failed miserably i.e. Von Papen – leading Germany during the Depression was very difficult Hindenburg believed that Hitler was dangerous and by offering him an important job such as vice-chancellor then he could control him/ keep an eye on him Hitler was offered the vice chancellorship but refused saying that he would only accept Chancellor Two right wing politicians – Von Papen & Von Schleicher convinced Hindenburg to appoint Hitler as they wanted to control Hitler/ use him to defeat Communism/ get back at one another The Nazis (1/3 of the Reichstag) were causing electoral chaos by walking out the Reichstag, deliberately crippling decision making
