Today I will be able to: interpret the mean
compare and contrast two small data sets that have the same mean but differ in variability. So I can: use dot plots to order data distributions according to the variability around the mean I will show I know it when I can: complete my stations with my partners with at least 80% accuracy. 6.SP.A.3

Language Objective By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use the language domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing. They will listen to and verbally communicate with their partners how to write and use dot plots to order data distributions according to the variability around the mean. They will also verbally compare and contrast two small data sets that have the same mean but differ in variability. They will show their understanding by completing stations with their partners with at least 80% accuracy. Academic Math Vocabulary: data point, distance between data point, standard deviation, center, spread, overall shape, dot plot, mean, cluster, spread out.

Remember….4 parts of Statistics
6
“The temperatures are spread out.”
A statistical question has a distribution (display) which can be described by its center, spread, and overall shape. mean median mode range standard deviation Go to pg. 49 “The temperatures are spread out.” “The temperatures are clustered together.”
7
Go to pg. 49 Dot Plot for New York City Dot Plot for San Francisco
63° for NYC , 64° for San Fran. The temperatures range from a low 39°F to a high of 85°F. The temperatures are spread out around the mean. The temperatures are clustered around the mean. The temperatures range from a low of 𝟓𝟕 °F to a high of 𝟕𝟓 °F.
8
Go to pg. 50 Dot Plot for New York City Dot Plot for San Francisco
Variability is different. Variability NYC is much greater than the variability in San Francisco. He should choose San Fran. because the temps. vary the least, low of 𝟓𝟕 °F a high of 𝟕𝟓 °F. NYC temperature has more variability, low of 𝟑𝟑 °F a high of 𝟖𝟓 °F.
