Only 1 Commandment In Chapters 1 -3 of Genesis the ONLY Commandment that God has given is that the man and woman are not to eat from the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
6
The Serpent A creature made by God but used by Satan
Insists the woman will not die if she eats the fruit, but will know good and evil and be god-like But this is a lie. Man and Woman were already made in God’s image and were blessed by God.
7
Eve The fruit looks good to her
She gives some to her husband (he is not forced!) The many derivatives of her name: Originally she was “woman” (and Adam was “man”) Hebrew Spellings/Meanings Hawwa = related to the Hb word “hay” meaning “living” Chavah or Havah= to breathe Chayah = to live or to give life
8
Man & Woman Hide from God because they know they have messed up!
Their nakedness is about shame, self-consciousness & self-preoccupation. Their Sin – They have appropriated for themselves what is God’s only.
9
God asks questions he knows the answers to…
Where are you? Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat? Hiding in the garden. They figured it out because they ate the forbidden fruit. Yes!
10
God Wants his creatures to flourish in the garden
Is not in competition with his creations nor can he be threatened by what he has created. God just loves!
11
What Is Sin? The absence or distortion of what is good.
The Garden of Eden is good. Man is good. Woman is good. Life in the Garden of Eden is good. Eve’s sin is what … REALLY? (we already know this!) God knows what is best for us. Her sin is in choosing something other than God. She is choosing her own will and not the will of God.
12
Adam & Eve knew good but once they eat the “forbidden” fruit they now know the contrasting experience of the evil of disobedience and the shame and guilt that go with it. They are not only aware of evil but in disobeying God they experience evil. God does not want Adam & Eve to know evil in the sense of participating in it. The sin is not that they gained knowledge of evil but that they went against the will of God. They appropriate (take) what they want instead of respecting God’s will.
13
Why put the tree there in the first place?
Because it is not about the tree. It is about choice and free will. God did not create a race of robots who would blindly choose him. The tree in and of itself is not evil. Neither is its fruit. It is the actions of Adam and Eve that are not good. They have distorted the good of the garden. Their relationship with God is broken.
