1 Teacher Guide This lesson is designed to teach kids to ask a critical thinking question that you can’t just put into a search box to solve. To do that, we encourage them with smaller questions that search can help them answer. Make sure that you read the notes for each slide: they not only give you teaching tips but also provide answers and hints so you can help the kids if they are having trouble. Remember, you can always send feedback to the Bing in the Classroom team at You can learn more about the program at bing.com/classroom and follow the daily lessons on our Partners In Learning site. Want to extend today’s lesson? Consider using Skype in the Classroom to arrange for your class to chat with another class in today’s location. And if you are using Windows 8, you can also use the Bing apps to learn more about this location and topic; the Travel and News apps in particular make great teaching tools. This lesson is designed to teach the Common Core State Standard: English Language Arts CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 9-10 texts and topics. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts, attending to the precise details of explanations or descriptions. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W E Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the argument presented.

2 In what ways are predators adapted to survive in their environments?
© J. Peltomaeki/age fotostock Having this up as kids come in is a great settle down activity. You can start class by asking them for thoughts about the picture or about ideas on how they could solve the question of the day.

3 In what ways are predators adapted to survive in their environments?
Researchers believe the great gray owl is the largest species of owl on Earth, though it’s out-weighed by the Eurasian eagle-owl. As it happens, great size coupled with relatively low weight is key to the great gray owl’s success as a hunter. Females average less than three pounds, males a little more than two. That leaves room for profuse, noise-reducing plumage, making it essentially silent in flight. With a wingspan as wide as 60 inches, they’re well-adapted to cruise the upper territory of the Northern Hemisphere, searching for small rodents and voles. Depending on time, you can either have students read this silently to themselves, have one of them read out loud, or read it out loud yourself.

4 In what ways are predators adapted to survive in their environments?
1 Image Search Search for some images of various natural predators. What are some common characteristics most of them share? 2 Web Search Describe the four stages of predation. 3 List various ways predators are able to spot or detect their prey. 4 List various ways predators are able to kill or subdue their prey. 5 What is social predation and what are some animals that practice it? There are a couple of ways to use this slide, depending on how much technology you have in your classroom. You can have students find answers on their own, divide them into teams to have them do all the questions competitively, or have each team find the answer to a different question and then come back together. If you’re doing teams, it is often wise to assign them roles (one person typing, one person who is in charge of sharing back the answer, etc.)

5 In what ways are predators adapted to survive in their environments?
5 Minutes You can adjust this based on how much time you want to give kids. If a group isn’t able to answer in 5 minutes, you can give them the opportunity to update at the end of class or extend time.

6 In what ways are predators adapted to survive in their environments?
1 Image Search Search for some images of various natural predators. What are some common characteristics most of them share? 2 Web Search Describe the four stages of predation. 3 List various ways predators are able to spot or detect their prey. 4 List various ways predators are able to kill or subdue their prey. 5 What is social predation and what are some animals that practice it? You can ask the students verbally or let one of them come up and insert the answer or show how they got it. This way, you also have a record that you can keep as a class and share with parents, others.

7 In what ways are predators adapted to survive in their environments?
1 Image Search Search for some images of various natural predators. What are some common characteristics most of them share? (Possible Search Queries: “Natural Predators,” “Various types of natural predators”) Sources: Bing Image Search: Students should note that most predators have a sharp natural weapon such as teeth, claws or stingers with which they are able to subdue their prey.

8 In what ways are predators adapted to survive in their environments?
2 Web Search Describe the four stages of predation. (Possible Search Queries: “Four Stages of Predation,” “Predation Stages” ) Sources Wikipedia: The four stages of predation are: detection, in which the predator spots or somehow becomes aware of prey, attack, in which the predator engages the prey with aggression with the intent to kill, capture, in which the predator attempts to subdue the prey for later use, and consumption in which the predator eats or otherwise extracts benefits or nutrients from the prey.

9 In what ways are predators adapted to survive in their environments?
3 Web Search List various ways predators are able to spot or detect their prey. (Possible Search Queries: “Predators methods of detection,” “How do predators spot prey,” “Eagles eyes, Sharks, Tigers”) Sources Wikipedia: Wikipedia: Eagles possess some of the best eyes in all of the natural world. They are able to spot potential prey up to two miles away. Sharks have a very keen sense of smell and are able to detect blood from potential prey in one part per million ratio.

10 In what ways are predators adapted to survive in their environments?
4 Web Search List various ways predators are able to kill or subdue their prey. (Possible Search Queries: “Natural Predator,” “Natural Predator’s Killing methods” “Snakes, Sharks, Tigers, Eagles, Spiders” etc. ) Sources Wikipedia: Students should note the variety among the various types of predatory methods such as: Biting with teeth, ripping with claws, strangulation, stinging or injecting venom through teeth or other mechanisms.

11 In what ways are predators adapted to survive in their environments?
5 Web Search What is social predation and what are some animals that practice it? (Possible Search Queries: “Social Predation” “Social Predation animals” “Social predation behavior”) Sources Wikipedia: Social predation is the practice of a group of predators grouping up to take down a larger prey (that an individual predator could take down on its own). Predators who practice such behavior include: Lions, Piranha and wolves.

12 In what ways are predators adapted to survive in their environments?
This slide is a chance to summarize the information from the previous slides to build your final answer to the question.
