7 Linoleum Block Print 1. DEFINITION: Linoleum Block Print – relief printing artistic technique in which an image is carved into the surface of a block of linoleum, carved typically with gouges. The areas to show the color of the paper (typically white) are cut away with a gouge, leaving the image to show in ‘color' or ink at the original surface level of the block.

13 Drawing vs. Relief Printing
Drawing is an additive process In typical Art production, (drawing and painting) you are creating your images based towards adding lines, shapes, colors, etc. Block printing is a reductive process In Block Printing, you are taking away (carving) what you do not want, therefore leaving your image intact.

15 Mirrored Image When choosing your image, it needs to be translatable from both sides because the image will be mirrored.

16 Printing Tools Brayer: Paint Scraper:

17 Printing Procedures 1. Consistently Ink Your Block with Brayer.
2. Align Your Paper. 3. Press and hold your paper down, Image UP 4. Rub the whole image consistently with the Spoon. 5. Hold the edges of your paper and pull back printed image. Note: You will need to wash your block if you are changing your printing color.

19 Assignment You are to create 3 consistent Prints for an Edition. And
You are to create 3 variation Prints.

20 Cleaning Procedures Clean your whole tray with water. Let Dry.
Clean Brayers, Paint Scrapers, and Tables. Store work on drying rack with your name on your prints.
