JOURNAL QUESTION… Think of the last time you were sick…. What was the MOST HELPFUL thing a person did or said to you? How did you respond? What was the LEAST HELPFUL thing a person did or said to you? How did you respond?

HEALING IN THE SACRAMENT:
The grace of this sacrament is to bring WHOLENESS to the sick person. WHOLENESS requires healing of our: BODY (SOMA) SPIRIT (PSYCHE) SELF

EVOLUTION OF THE SACRAMENT
During Jesus’ earthly ministry, one of his primary actions was that of healing Oil was used as a way to anoint those who are sick to bring them to health From the 8th-12th centuries, the sacrament was delayed until someone was near death This is why the Sacrament had been called “Last Rites,” or “Extreme Unction,” meaning “last anointing”

It’s not happening to me… ANGER Why is this happening to ME? BARGAINING If only I would/did… DEPRESSION Yes, this is happening to ME. ACCEPTANCE I accept this is happening to me.

TODAY… The sacrament is used today for people near death or people who are sick The Oil of the Infirm is used during anointing VIATICUM is a typical part of the sacrament From the Latin terms, meaning Food “for the journey”
