WECC Staff Risk Prioritization
Branden Sudduth Director, Reliability Risk Management Western Electricity Coordinating Council
2
Near-Term Priority Identification
Reliability Issues Let others take the lead but stay abreast of the issue Monitor Let others take the lead (NERC, DOE, EPRI, etc.) but participate and communicate results Participate & Support Initiate & Study WECC Near-Term Priorities = the issue has a unique impact or importance to the Western Interconnection and/or WECC can make a material contribution Western Electricity Coordinating Council

Initiate and Study Impacts of the changing load and resource mix Impacts of potential Reliability Coordinator and market structures Methods to improve coordination between WECC and the Regional and International Planning Groups Western Electricity Coordinating Council
7
Recommended Near-Term Priorities
Improve the modeling of inverter-based resources in WECC’s base cases with a focus on utility-scale photovoltaic, battery storage and distributed energy resources. Evaluate the impacts of the changing resource mix on: Existing Path Ratings Remedial Action Scheme effectiveness/fault duty Resource adequacy (evaluate RA methods) Distributed energy resources ERS specific to the Western Interconnection Western Electricity Coordinating Council
8
Near-Term Priorities (cont.)
Evaluate potential reliability risks and market impacts resulting from the expansion of RC/market service providers in the Western Interconnection. Improve coordination by clarifying the roles, responsibilities and relationships between WECC, the Regional Planning Groups, International Planning Groups, Transmission Planners and other stakeholders involved in BPS planning.
