Figurative Language

2 Idiom An idiom is a saying that has a meaning that’s different than the literal meaning of the phrase.

4 hyperbole Hyperbole is a word or a phrase that does not have its normal everyday literal meaning. It is an exaggeration.

5 Hyperbole Examples I had to wait an eternity!
I’m so hungry, I can eat a horse! It’s taking a million years to get ready! It’s the best pizza in the whole wide world! This suitcase weighs a ton! The baby’s smile is a mile long! It was so cold, I saw polar bears wearing jackets If I can’t get a smartphone, I will die! My shoes are killing me! This car goes faster than the speed of light!

6 Alliteration Alliteration are words that start with the same sound & are used close together in a phrase or a sentence.

7 Alliteration Come and clean your closet.
The big bad bear attacked all the little bunnies in the forest. Shut the shutter before it makes you shudder. Go and gather the green leaves in the lawn. Please put your pen away and play the piano. The baron was busy as a bee. Round and round she ran until she realized she was running round and round. Lazy lizards lying like lumps! Paula planted the petunias in the pot. Boil the butter and bring it by the bank. Larry’s lizard likes leaping leopards.

8 Onomatopoeia Onomatopoeia is a word that imitates the sound of the object or action it refers to. When you pronounce the word, it will mimic the sound of what it is describing.

10 Personification Personification is a figure of speech in which a thing – an idea or an animal – is given human attributes. The non-human objects are portrayed in such a way that we feel they have the ability to act like human beings.

The wind howled in the night. The car complained as the key was turned. Rita heard the last piece of pie calling her name. My alarm clock yells at me every morning. Traffic slowed to a crawl. The door protested as it opened slowly. My house is a friend who protects me. The moon played hide and seek with the clouds. That book was so popular, it flew off the shelves. My car’s headlights winked at me. She is so beautiful the camera loves her. Our vacuum hums a happy tune while it cleans. Time flies and waits for no one.
