Addition and Subtraction
Adding money using column addition Starter Day 1 Add any pair of 2-digit numbers Pre-requisite skills – to use this starter, drag this slide to the start of Day 1 Children play a game in pairs. Each child rolls a 0–9 dice twice to make a 2-digit number, i.e. if one child rolls a 3 and 7 they could choose to make 37 or 73. If the other child rolls a 4 and a 9 they could choose to make 49 or 94. They find the total of their two 2-digit numbers. How many can they complete in 5 minutes? They score 1 point for each total, but an extra point for any total over 50. Year 4

Addition and Subtraction
Adding money using column addition Starter Use place value to add and subtract Pre-requisite skills – to use this starter, drag this slide to the start of Day 2 Write on the board some additions/subtractions that children can use place value to answer, e.g , 647 – 20, , 872 – 610 (no exchanging or moving digits across place value columns). Children work in pairs to answer as many as they can in 5 minutes. Discuss how these are ‘low work’ calculations! Year 4

Day 1: Add amounts of money using expanded and compact addition.
We can use expanded addition to add £3.24 and £2.58. £3 20p 4p + £2 50p 8p 10p Partition the amounts into £s, 10ps and 1ps. Line the columns up neatly and don’t forget a blank ‘waiting line’ under the second number. £5 80p 2p £5 + 80p + 2p = £5.82 Next add the 10ps. 20p + 50p + 10p = ? Add the 1ps. 4p + 8p = 12p. We put 10p under the 10ps in the waiting line and 2p under the 1ps in the answer line. Then the £s. £3 + £2 = ? Finally recombine the pounds and pence. Year 4
