2 Objective I CAN answer questions about the main idea of a text and cite evidence to support my answers.

3 Guided Notes Main Idea The most important or central thought of a paragraph or larger section of text. The main idea tells the reader what the text is about. The main idea is also sometimes referred to as the gist. Relevant evidence: Evidence from the text that directly relates to the answer you are giving.

4 Guided Notes Cite: To quote someone or something as an example to support or help explain what is being said.

5 Answering Text Dependent Questions
READ THE QUESTION FOR UNDERSTANDING (identify what the question wants to know) THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU READ (15 seconds) ANSWER THE QUESTION First, put the answer in your own words. Second, support your answer with key details/evidence from the text using a textual evidence sentence starter. Finally, EXPLAIN how the evidence supports your answer.
