01Intro Social acceptance will be as important to the uptake of autonomous vehicles (AV) as any other metric, technology cost or otherwise. Understanding public attitudes and concerns towards AV is integral to gauging the current level of social acceptance of AV and an important precursor to knowing how increasing the level of social acceptance of AV can be achieved. Surveys: 3 x RAA member panel autonomous vehicle surveys 2014, 2017, 2018. ADVI Australian national survey of opinion about automated and driverless vehicles, preliminary results 2017. RAC WA autonomous vehicle survey conducted in 2016, associated with AV trial. Flinders University Express autonomous shuttle trial survey currently underway. 02Attitiudes towards AV Awareness:
High - Overall 95%, 94%, 94% (RAA 2014, 2018, FLEX), were aware of AV. RACWA M79% F50% Lower for specific autonomous level 2 features “Change lanes” 34.8%, 48% (ADVI, RAA 2018 ) Security: Overall 49%, 40% (RAA 2014, 2017) said they would not feel safe in an AV Only 7% said they would use an AV to deliver their kids to after school activities ( RAA 2018) General: People still perceive benefits in AV like improved mobility for those who can’t drive, reduced parking hassles and the ability to better use travel time for more productive activities Social Acceptance of Autonomous Vehicles

04Importance of demonstration trials
People base their opinions on what they know and what they have seen. This can be from media coverage or this can come from first hand experience. The media highlight negative events as part of the popular news culture. Social Acceptance of Autonomous Vehicles
