Muscles and Movements

Names Associated with Muscle Movements
Adduction/Abduction Flexion/Extension Rotation Pronation/Supination Plantar Flexion/ Dorsiflexion
3
Adduction Adduction is the movement of a body part toward the body's midline. If a person has their arms straight out at the shoulders and brings them down to their sides, it is adduction. If it is a person’s fingers, movement towards the middle of the center of the hands. Example: Lat Adduction Exercises.
4
Abduction Abduction is the movement AWAY from the body’s midline.
Example: Standing Dumbbell Fly
5
Flexion Flexion is a joint movement that DECREASES the angle between the bones that converge at the joint.
6
Extension Extension is the opposite of flexion, describing a straightening movement that INCREASES the angle between the bones that converge at the joint.
7
Rotation Rotation is movement in which something, e.g. a bone or a whole limb, pivots or revolves around a single long axis.
8
Pronation/Supination
Pronation and supination are a pair of unique movements possible only in the forearms and hands, allowing the human body to flip the palm either face up or face down. Easy way to remember…SOUPination = holding a bowl of soup in your hand.
9
How to Remember the Difference
Easy way to remember…SOUPination = holding a bowl of soup in your hand.
10
Plantar Flexion Plantar flexion is a movement in which the top of your foot points away from your leg. You use plantar flexion whenever you stand on the tip of your toes or point your toes.
11
Dorsiflextion Dorsiflexion is the movement of the foot upwards, so that the foot is closer to the shin.
12
Dorsiflexion Think about how the foot looks like in the picture… Kind of looks like a dorsal fin of a dolphin…? AKA dorsiflexion.
