1 Lymphatic & Endocrine Systems
Medical Terminology Lymphatic & Endocrine Systems

2 Adenitis, adenoma, adenopathy Edema fluid in cells or tissue, to swell
Gland Adenitis, adenoma, adenopathy Edema fluid in cells or tissue, to swell Angioedema, bronchoedema, lymphedema Blephar/o Eyelid Blepharedema Lymph/o Fluid between structures Lymphnode, lymphcapillary Adrenal Near the kidney Adrenal gland, adrenalopathy (disease of a suprarenal gland) Cortoid An action similar to hormone Adrenocorticotropic (stimulating growth of suprarenal cortex) Supra Above Suprarenal glands (glands above the kidney: also called adrenal glands) Thyroid Resembling a shield Thyroid gland (refers to the shield-shaped gland near the larynx), hypoparathyroidism Splen/o Spleen Splenomegaly Define difference between swelling and inflammation, inflammation can occur without swelling/

3 The Endocrine System The organs that regulate hormones throughout the body The endocrine system is the collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things. The endocrine system is made up of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries (in females) and testicles (in males),

4 The Endocrine System Hypothalamus
Link between endocrine and nervous systems

5 The Endocrine System Pituitary Gland
Creates hormones that control other glands. Considered the “master gland” No bigger than a pea

6 The Endocrine System Thyroid & Parathyroids
Thyroid creates hormones to control rate that cells use fuel from food Parathyroids regulate calcium levels The thyroid produces thyroxine – T4 the main hormone produced by the thyroid gland, acting to increase metabolic rate and so regulating growth and development. and triiodothyronine-Triiodothyronine, also known as T₃, is a thyroid hormone. It affects almost every physiological process in the body, including growth and development, metabolism, body temperature, and heart rate.

7 The Endocrine System Adrenal Glands
The Cortex (outer) controls salt and water levels in blood The Medulla (inner) increases blood pressure and heart rate during stress Each one has two parts. Cortex (outer) creates corticosteroids which influence the salt and water levels in the body. This influences the bodies response to stress, metabolism, the immune system, and sexual development and function. The medulla (inner) produces catecholamine's, such as epinephrine (also called adrenaline), increases BP and heart rate when the body experiences stress.

8 The Endocrine System Pineal Gland
Located in the middle of the brain. Secreted melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate the wake-sleep cycle.

9 The Lymphatic System Helps the body fight infection & regulates body fluid levels. The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that primarily consists of lymph vessels, lymph nodes and lymph. The tonsils, adenoids, spleen and thymus are all part of the lymphatic system. There are 600 to 700 lymph nodes in the human body that filter the lymph before it returns to the circulatory system.

10 The Lymphatic System Lymph nodes
Filters for the immune system. Cleans out blood and other fluids in the body  Lymph nodes are major sites of B, T, and other immune cells. Lymph nodes are important for the proper functioning of the immune system, acting as filters for foreign particles andcancer cells. Lymph nodes do not deal with toxicity, which is primarily dealt with by the liver and kidneys. he condition of the lymph nodes is very important in cancer staging, which decides the treatment to be used, and determines the prognosis

11 The Lymphatic System Lymph vessels
Carries Lymph from tissue and the blood stream

12 The Lymphatic System Spleen Controls blood circulation throughout body
