1 Do Now: Describe a time when someone challenged something you really believed in? What did you say to defend yourself and what you believe in. For example: ***When people say they hate dogs because they are dirty, and dumb, I get very upset because I know it’s not true. I defend my point of view by giving the person real life examples of how dogs are not dirty, and dumb, and how they are actually clean and smart. ***

2 Aim: How did British rule impact India and how did British rule lead to resistance within India?
Date: January 5, 2017

3 What’s going on? By 1850, the British controlled most of the Indian subcontinent. Many Indians were upset that the British took over and were trying to convert them to Christianity. The Indian people also hated the racism the British expressed toward them. What is a sepoy? Look back to yesterday's notes.

4 The Sepoy Mutiny What happened?
85 of the 90 sepoys refused to accept the cartridges. The British arrested the sepoys and the next day, the sepoys rebelled. They marched to Delhi and captured. From there, the rebellion spread to northern and central India. This was known as the Sepoy Mutiny. The Sepoy Mutiny Indians Rebel: In 1857, gossip spread that the cartridges of the new Enfield rifles were greased with beef and pork fat. What was the problem with this?? To use the cartridges, soldiers had to bite off the ends. Both Hindus, who consider the cow sacred, and Muslims, who do not eat pork, were outraged and felt disrespected. Stop and think: What would you have done if you were one of the sepoys and why?

5 Unity or Disunity? Turning Point -
In 1858, the British government took direct command of India. Raj: was the term used when India came under British control under the reign of Queen Victoria. The British promised to respect all treaties the East India Company made with them, and promised them they would remain independent and free. Stop and Think: Would you have put your differences aside and worked together or would you have rather kept the British in control? Why couldn’t the Indians unite? Hindus did not want the Muslim Mughal Empire restored. Hindus preferred British rule to Muslim rule.

6 Nationalism Surfaces in India
Demands: The Indian people wanted a greater role in governing themselves. Ram Mohun Roy, a modern-thinking, well- educated Indian, began a campaign to move india away from traditional practices and ideas. (Arranged child marriages, caste system) He said that if India did not change, they would continue to be controlled by the British. Indian people did not want to live in a place that made them second-class citizens behind the British. They wanted to be able to participate in politics and get paid the same as the British who held the same jobs. Nationalist Groups Form: Nationalism in India led to the founding of two nationalist groups: The Indian National Congress (1885) The Muslim League (1906) A british engineer made almost 20x more than an indian engineer
