Overweight and Youth The number of teens in this country who are overweight has tripled. This is a cause of major concern among health professionals. Developing a healthy eating plan as a teen will reduce your risk of becoming overweight as you age.

Being overweight can affect a person’s self-esteem and quality of life. Being excessively overweight is linked with a number of chronic physical diseases and conditions.

Sleep apnea A condition in which a person stops breathing during sleep, due to obstructed or reduced air passages. Term to Know Overweight people are at a higher risk for sleep apnea. Untreated sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases, memory problems, weight gain, and headaches.

Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) A disorder in which blood glucose levels become elevated. Term to Know Another serious condition related to overweight is impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).

Insulin A hormone produced by the pancreas. Term to Know Often in those with IGT, the pancreas produces too little insulin to convert food into glucose, which is then stored in the blood.

Underweight Underweight Having a Body Mass Index (BMI) that is below the 5th percentile for one’s age. Term to Know In the face of the overweight epidemic, it is easy to lose sight of the reverse problem—being excessively lean, or underweight.
