Vocabulary Community- a place where people live, work, and play together Law- a rule that people follow to keep order and to be fair Citizen- an official member of a community, state, or country

People Together Working together is an important part of being a community Different kinds of people live in a community Some are families, some are young or old, some come from a different country

Laws and Communities Laws help people get along with each other and keeps them safe In the U.S., citizens choose leaders to make laws People who are born in the U.S. are citizens

Laws and Communities Following rules and laws are part of being a citizen People who come to the U.S. from another country can also become a citizen

Vocabulary Population- the number of people who live in a certain place or area Urban area- the land found in a city Suburb- a community that is close to a city Rural land- land that is far from a city and has a smaller population than a suburb

The Places People Live Communities come in all different sizes
The bigger the city, the more population (number of people) they have in that city

An Urban Community An urban area is another name for city land and space Every state has at least one urban area Urban areas have a lot of businesses and they need thousands of workers Cars, buses, and trains help people who work or live in urban areas get to different places

Suburban Communities People who want to live near a city, but not in the city, might live in a suburb Suburbs are communities that are next to or near a city Suburbs are like cities because they have businesses and schools but they are not crowded like a city

Rural Communities A rural community is far from a city
A rural community has fewer people than suburban areas and more open space A lot of people who own farms live in rural communities
