Road Map for Success: Ronald Reagan and the 1980s ( ) The 1980s saw the rise of a New Conservatism. President Ronald Reagan, standing for traditional values and smaller government, symbolized this movement. While tax cuts and new technologies fueled an economic boom, Reagan embarked on a massive military buildup and expanded efforts to contain communism. While containing communism, a new Red Scare emerged and with it the next generation of anti-communist and anti-Russian American sentiment. The 1980s does not limit itself to being simply a political and technological showcase—it also dramatically impacts the United States culturally and socially. Reforms and regulations in education paved the way for much change in the American landscape, as did the introduction of HIV and AIDS on the world stage. The 80s will go down in history as one of the most important decades in American history. You are about to find out why.
